Our Matric class of 2024
Our Matric Class of 2024, a Class of 28 students assembled from 13 different feeder schools within the Umgungundlovu District of KwaZulu-Natal, have achieved extremely impressive results! With all of the hype of KZN achieving the second highest pass-rate in the Republic of South Africa, one needs to view PROTEC Pmb’s achievement very carefully – especially with regards to the academic subject line-up studied by the students. With more and more students being cajoled into studying Mathematics Literacy and Tourism in place of core Mathematics and the Sciences, one must remember that ALL PROTEC Pmb students must study core Mathematics and Physical Science – AND MOST study Life Sciences, Accounting or Engineering Graphics and Design as well!
The PROTEC Pmb Class, achieved a 100% Pass-rate and all Class members achieved a Bachelor Admission Pass – these allow the students to progress to Bachelors Degrees at any traditional academic University throughout South Africa, and a good many overseas Universities as well. Our Grade 12s also scored 65 Subject Distinctions!! We are really thrilled for these 28 students and their parents !

Of significance this year, is the fact that our results have remained at a 100% Pass-rate, as well as a 100% Bachelor Admission pass rate. This is an excellent achievement, and every Student and Tutor is congratulated on their outstanding results!
In an online article published by Sibahle Malinga in Johannesburg on 14 January 2025, the following comment is noted:
“…two subjects considered to be key building blocks for entry into the ICT Sector, Mathematics and Physical Science – delivered a mixed bag of results (in the 2024 NSC Examinations). In 2024, 69.1% passed Maths – an increase from 63.5% in 2023, while 75.6% passed Physical Science – a decrease from 76.2% last year! However, there were 12 338 fewer candidates in 2024 writing Maths, and 7000 fewer candidates writing Physical Science in 2024, as compared to 2023….”
We are very aware of this trend here at PROTEC Pmb, as local schools are now offering fewer places in core Mathematics, both in urban and rural areas. This is all tied to the pressure the Dept of Basic Education in placing on Schools to raise their Pass-Rates AT ANY COST!
The PROTEC Pmb Class of 2024 received many Conditional Offers from a variety of Universities ahead of these results being published – so before the end of 2024; our students had to make those incredibly difficult decisions of WHERE to study – these were life-defining decisions!
Very few Tertiary Study Bursary offers arrived – this was tragic, with most students having to pursue NSFAS or Government sponsorship which is often unpredictable and does not cover various aspects of University Study. Our Parents are not in a position to pay for Tertiary Education, as KwaZulu-Natal is terribly economically depressed; this has resulted in massive unemployment and poverty.
PROTEC Pmb Academy is greatly indebted to its well qualified and highly experienced Tutors who drive our intensive academic programmes within Saturday and Vacation School, and our incredible Donors – without whom we could NOT function: they ensure the continued survival of PROTEC Pietermaritzburg Academy.
