Our Matric class of 2022

Our Matric Class of 2022, twenty-five delightful students of mixed academic abilities, certainly exceeded our expectations in achieving a 100% pass rate and a 92% bachelors acceptance rate – only two students missed their bachelors acceptance but nevertheless achieved good diploma passes.  The Class also scored 71 Subject Distinctions!!  We are so thrilled for these 25 students and their parents 😊

It has been pointed out that one of the most challenging factors affecting this Class whilst they were in Grade 10 in 2020,  was that they were largely ignored with regard to their ongoing education during that ghastly first Covid-19 Pandemic Year, AND again in 2021, when they were in Grade 11. “Teaching” in their schools during the Pandemic, consisted of students having to collect a limited number of printed instructions on what to study from textbooks, and if you did NOT have a textbook (which was the case for many students as textbooks are often shared), your education ground to a halt.  Had it not been for PROTEC Pmb providing this Class with online WhatsApp lessons (and sponsored smartphones) in English Literature, Mathematics, Physical AND Life Sciences along with proper Career Guidance, these Grade 12 results could well have been something of a nightmare.

Instead, we can now happily celebrate the following:

As well as a good number of students with 4, 3, 2 and 1 distinctions

This year commenced with Covid-19 restrictions on classroom occupancy – hence we only had 25 students instead of 40; later in the year we encouraged anxious Grade 12 students to join in unofficially, in order to improve their academic performance, and boost their confidence.  Loneliness and isolation, as well as poor education materials have beset this class since March 2020.

Of HUGE significance this year, is the fact that our results have remained at a 100% pass-rate, and with an amazing 92% achievement of a University Exemption or Bachelors Admission passrate! This remains a phenomenal achievement, and every Student and Tutor is congratulated on their outstanding results.  All PROTEC Pmb students must study both core Mathematics AND Physical Science, and this is fast becoming more and more difficult. A recent Facebook post reflected upon this fact:

“1,2 million children started Grade 1 in 2011. Of that number, 775 630 reached Grade 12 in 2022.  Of those children, less than 64 000 passed Matric Mathematics with over 50% in 2022 – that is <5% (less than five percent)”

This fact tells us that there is something terribly wrong with our South African Schooling system.  No students study Physical Science without studying Mathematics, so all Technological Careers, (those demanding excellence in these two subjects), would be open to the MAJORITY OF SCHOOL LEAVERS IN SOUTH AFRICA, AT PRESENT!  Technological Careers include Engineering (all fields), ICT, Medicine and paramedical careers, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering and Research, Biotechnology etc

The PROTEC Pmb Class of 2022 has received countless Offers from a variety of Universities ahead of these results being published; they are currently making those incredibly difficult decisions about WHICH university offers to accept – these are life-defining decisions!  Tertiary Study Bursary offers will hopefully soon arrive as well 😊

PROTEC Pmb Academy is greatly indebted to its well qualified and highly experienced Tutors who drive our intensive academic programmes within Saturday and Vacation School, and our wonderful Donors – without whom we could NOT function:  they ensure the continued survival of PROTEC Pietermaritzburg Academy.
