Our conquering Matric class of 2021

Our Matric Class of 2021, who bravely conquered the isolation of two pandemic years, anxiety, poverty and poor education – committed to being taught largely via PROTEC Pmb WhatsApp lessons (using parent’s or friend’s smartphones), when they were in Grade 11 in 2020, and again whilst in Grade 12 in 2021. These admirable students have gone on to produce these incredible results, which you will read below – many coming from rural and semi-rural schools, not having Maths/Science teachers in Grade 11 or decent textbooks to assist them.

It has been pointed out that if one factors in the total number of children who registered for Grade 10 in 2019, only 51,4% of that number of schoolchildren passed Grade 12 in 2021.  The others are lost from the Basic Education System and have no formal education certificate.

As well as a good number of students with 4, 3, 2 and 1 distinctions

A total of 23 Grade 12 students were registered fully with PROTEC Pmb this year; we also encouraged any isolated and anxious Grade 12 (or lower) students to join in unofficially, during the long weeks of the Covid-19 Pandemic.  Loneliness and isolation, as well as poor education materials have beset this class since March 2020.

Of HUGE significance this year, is the fact that our results have remained at a 100% pass-rate, BUT with an amazing 100% achievement of a full University Exemption or Bachelors Admission pass for every student in the Class of 2021. This is a phenomenal achievement, and every Student and Tutor is congratulated on their outstanding results.

Despite all of these ongoing challenges of poor accommodation and no water supply which forced PROTEC Pmb into online WhatsApp teaching, our PROTEC students have produced results on par with the quality we have become accustomed to.  This required an enormous effort and focus on their part – as well as for our Tutors to adapt to an odd and exhausting online manner of teaching – one with very limited expression, being that of voice notes, sketches, photos and short texts. I extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to our Tutors, for a job extremely well done!

We believe these results to be nothing short of miraculous!

We are really pleased with the number of Subject Distinctions achieved by our students in 2021 – 65; this is an average of 3 Distinctions per Student, which is incredibly good.  We congratulate all of our PROTEC Pmb students for attaining these very good results, and wish them everything of the very best for the future.

Our Donors must also not be forgotten – they ensure the continued survival of PROTEC Pietermaritzburg Academy.
